Beginner Photography Competition Winner Announced

November’s Photo Competition

The votes are in! Miguel Schertel wins November’s night challenge with his colourful photo of the London Eye. Congratulations Miguel on winning a free place on one of our workshops.

Photography Competition Winner - Miguel Schertel

A few of you have been asking how he achieved the ‘spinning disk’ effect of the London Eye. It all comes down to long exposures. We’re talking 15-30 seconds so a tripod is necessary. Set your camera’s mode to S or Tv and select a shutter speed somewhere around 20 seconds.

The longer the exposure the more the wheel looks ready to take off. Also, the longer you have your shutter open for the more saturated the colours in the reflection will be too.

So put on a hat and scarf and go out and try it! Feel free to post or send me your results.

Celebrating WPOTY in Brighton

Photography Exhibition on Brighton Seafront

Last weekend I was in Brighton for a day trip out of London. It’s an interesting place to take photos as there is both the seafront, the pier and the Lanes to explore.

There was also the surprise of a wildlife photo exhibition along the sea front. This exhibition is run by NHM and Wild Planet and shows various photos from across the years of the wildlife photographer of the year competition. It’s there until 26 September and is lit up at night!

Celebrating WPOTY in Brighton

There were also a few billboards with beginner photography tips on them. I enjoyed seeing these as the photography group are off in September to the London Wetlands Centre to learn how to photograph wildlife, so it was good to read the tips and get a head start!

Celebrating WPOTY in Brighton

So Brighton is well worth a visit at the best of times, but definitely until the 26th September if you like photography as the outdoor exhibition is a great chance to learn. As it says in the shot above, pick out your favourite photos and work out what makes them a great image.

Back in March I wrote a post about the Urban Trees For Cities photo competition. It seems the competition is going from strength to strength with more than 119 photos now. A couple more details have now been released; read on to find out more.

Photo Competition Deadline

Their deadline has been extended until 22 April so you still have a few more days to enter the competition. My favourite images so far are:

Trees For Cities – They Need Your Photos

I just came across this photography competition on one of my (as happens) internet browsing trails.

It’s a chance to upload your urban tree photos and have others see them for your efforts, as I don’t think there are any prizes available :(

And there is the ‘warning’ of ‘by submitting your photographs to the Trees for Cities photo competition flickr group you are granting us the right to use the photo on our website and in marketing materials.’ So perhaps it’s all for their publicity…?

Showcase Your Photos

However, for beginner photographers like me, having a photo used in marketing materials for a worthy cause would be a great start and boost to my confidence!

Mini competitions like these, which use flickr as an easy way to organise a photo competition, are worth entering as they give you exposure, the chance to learn from other photos, and they get you prepared for entering future competitions.

What have you got to lose? Kick start the competition with an entry. Good luck!
